McFranchising Part 2

by bacardiancoke @ 2008-01-09 - 13:21:51

One of my very first blogs was about how the company at a regional meeting were singing the praises of franchising and how it is the way to go.

I knew then that it was only a matter of time before it came to our little sleepy corner of the northwest.

And sure enough on Monday it did.

My ops con and ops manager walked in to announce that we are being sold off with the store.

Guess this renders my blog obelete now!

Why not purchase the franchise?

A McD franchise is a 20 year lease (the location of which could be anywhere in the UK, not necessarily where you are currently located) on the business that requires an initial investment of about £250k.

Amongst many other things I'd call that a suitable stumbling block.

Can you not speak to a bank or two? I wouldn't imagine that most franchise holders have GBP 250K in their back pocket.

No, true. Not looked into it to be honest.

If I were to buy a franchise (had the initial cash capital, many companies won't entertain unless you have about £20k in savings and then bank loan) Macs would not be my first choice of business, or industry come to think of it.

Why not have a go? Research, find your industry of choice and do it?

What would your preferred choice be?

You are being sold? Is selling people legal where you are?

Well, sometimes you wonder.

What I mean is that my contract will be part of the franchise deal, so in a way I am being sold.

That's what I thought, but one must have one's little joke. I hope they don't sneak a pay cut in!

Fortunately there are a couple of laws that keep most of my contract safe (including pay.)

As for benefits, that's a whole different matter!

Its called 'transfer of undertaking' these days. Used to be called serfdom.
